The sixth PokerStars Caribbean Adventure is a spectacular "festival of poker" taking place January 5-10, 2009, at the beautiful Atlantis Resort and Casino in the Bahamas. The 2009 PCA again forms part of the European Poker Tour and looks set to be the biggest and best yet - with a higher buy-in for the main event of $10,000 ($9,700 + 300), a special $25,000 high roller event taking place January 7-8 and three further side events with buy-ins of $1,000, $2,000 and $5,000 - plus live satellites to LAPT Chile and the EPT Grand Final.
At the first PCA, held on a Caribbean cruise ship in 2004, just 221 players turned up to play and winner Gus Hansen took home $455,780. Now the PCA has become one of the biggest high stakes tournaments in the world with a minimum $2 million first prize. Last year, a total of 1,136 players competed, 650 of whom had won their seats online with PokerStars. It took two days to fit everyone in - and five days to cull the field to the top eight players. At the final table, all but one of them - Team PokerStars Pro Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier - had qualified via a PokerStars satellite.
Against phenomenal competition, including the likes of Americans David Pham, Kris Kuykendall and Ricky Fohrenbach, ElkY played a superb game, grabbing the chip lead and keeping it until the end, bringing him a $2 million first prize and the coveted PCA Champion title.
