    LONDON

London, the capital of England and the United Kingdom, is one of the world's leading business, financial and cultural centres and the largest city in Europe with a population of nearly eight million.

London is a major tourist destination, with four world heritage sites and numerous world-famous landmarks and attractions such as the Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge, Covent Garden, the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, St Paul's Cathedral, Buckingham Palace and the London Eye along with important cultural institutions such as the British Museum and the National Gallery. The shopping and entertainment heart of London is the "West End" - a large and lively area which encompasses Oxford Street, Picadilly Circus, Soho and Leicester Square. London is also a major international transport hub - Heathrow, the main London airport, carries more international passengers than any other airport in the world.

    Useful Information

    Currency: Pound Sterling (£1 = $2 approx/€1.46).

Banks: Most banks have an exchange counter and are usually open from 9am - 5.30pm weekdays and half-day Saturdays. Automatic cash dispensers (ATMs) are widespread throughout the city. Some hotels will also exchange money (at rates generally higher than banks).

    HOW TO GET THERE:

    BY AIR:
London has several airports within easy reach of the city centre. The main London airport is Heathrow, the busiest airport in the world, which serves nearly all major international airlines as well as numerous budget airlines. Heathrow is 15 miles west of London (24km). The other London airports - Gatwick, Luton and Stansted - are slightly further out but enjoy easy train and bus links into the city centre.

    From Heathrow Airport:
A taxi into the city centre will cost around £40+. The Heathrow Express train service to Paddington Station costs £14.50 and takes 15 minutes. Paddington is close to the centre, by London Underground, bus or taxi. It is also possible to take the London Underground direct from Heathrow to the city centre (Picadilly line). A taxi would take around 40 minutes and cost between £40 and £60.

    From Gatwick Airport:
The easiest way to get into London from Gatwick (45 miles south of the centre) is by train. (A taxi journey into the capital could take over an hour and could cost up to £95 or more.) The Gatwick Express train to Victoria Station runs every quarter of an hour, takes only 30 minutes and costs £15. Victoria is minutes from Buckingham Palace and close to the city centre - by London Underground, bus or taxi.

    From Stansted Airport:
A lot of budget airlines fly into Stansted Airport which is 67 miles north-east of London. The Stansted Express train service to Liverpool Street station runs every 15 minutes, takes approximately 45 minutes and costs £11.50. Liverpool Street, in the heart of London's "City" business district, enjoys good bus and London Underground links with the rest of the capital.

    From Luton Airport:
A lot of budget airlines fly into Luton Airport which is 35 miles north-west of London. There is a regular train service into central London (Kings Cross train station) which takes approximately 30 minutes and costs £10.90. Kings Cross is close to London's West End and enjoys good bus and London Underground links with the rest of the city. Several bus services also run from Luton airport into the centre of London.
