BADEN
Baden lies 26 kilometres south of the Austrian capital of Vienna and has been famed as a spa town for centuries. The healing thermal, sulphurous mineral springs were already known to the Romans as "Aquae". In the early 19th century, Emperor Francis I chose the town as his summer residence - turning it overnight into a highly fashionable, high society resort. This brought considerable wealth into Baden and led to the building of parks, mansions, palaces and elegant villas - as well as the casino and opera house. Mozart and Beethoven both resided and worked in Baden as well Franz Liszt and the Strauss brothers.
Baden is still famous for its medicinal sulfur springs, which have a natural temperature of 36 degrees, and there are numerous pools and spas throughout the town. Baden's other key attraction is its wine. Surrounded by some 120 vineyards, the town boasts about 70 wine "pubs" ("Heurige").
