    COPENHAGEN

Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark, Europe's oldest kingdom and has a population of 1.2 million. Copenhagen dates back to the Viking Age, when it was just a small fishing village known as Havn. The excellent harbour and strategic location helped turn it into an important centre of commerce and by 1416, Copenhagen had become the royal capital of Denmark.

Many of the city's outstanding buildings date back to the reign of King Christian IV, who was king from 1588 to 1648. Today, Copenhagen is one of the world's premier design capitals, full of sumptuous palaces, copper-roofed town houses and atmospheric cobbled squares. Copenhagen is home to the Little Mermaid statue, the character from Hans Christian's Andersen's celebrated fairy tale. It is now the most popular tourist attraction in Denmark and one of the most photographed statues in the world.

    Useful Information

Official language: Danish, but English is very widely spoken.

    Currency: the Danish Kroner (1 DKK = $0.18 approx; $1 = 5.5 DKK).

Banks: Most banks have an exchange counter and are open Monday to Friday, 9.30am-4pm. Automatic cash dispensers (ATMs) are widespread throughout the city and at the casino. Some hotels will also exchange money (at rates generally higher than banks).

International dialing codes: +45 (the USA is +1)

Time: Denmark is in the Central European Time zone. All tournament times are local.

    HOW TO GET THERE:

AIR: You can fly into Copenhagen International Airport which is conveniently located in Kastrup, 9km southeast of the city centre.

BOAT: There are daily ferries between Oslo and Copenhagen, and Bornholm and Copenhagen, which leave from Kvæsthusbroen, north of Nyhavn.

BUS: Buses and trains connect Copenhagen to the rest of Denmark and mainland Europe, while making your own way over the magnificent and relatively new bridge from Malmö, Sweden, will set you back a couple of hundred kroner.
Central Station is where you can catch buses and trains to elsewhere in Denmark and trains to Sweden.

TRAIN: The imposing bulk of Central Station (Hoved Banegården) is the terminal for rail services east across the Øresund to Sweden and west across Zealand to the other main Danish regions of Funen and Jutland.

    GETTING AROUND:

The city's extensive public transport system comprises a rail network called S-train, with 10 lines passing through Central Station, and a bus system called HT (or Hovedstadsområdets Trafikselskab) that uses Rådhuspladsen as its main terminal. Fares for both are charged according to a zone system, with a variety of single, multiple-ride or daily tickets available.

If you want to explore Copenhagen's waterways, various companies run organised boat tours around the city's canals.

The brand-new driverless metro system connects the east and west of Copenhagen via the city centre. Parts of the system are still under construction until 2007, when it will finally connect with the airport.

Taxis are easy to get and efficient, albeit a bit more expensive.
