COPENHAGEN
Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark, Europe's oldest kingdom and has a population of 1.2 million. Copenhagen dates back to the Viking Age, when it was just a small fishing village known as Havn. The excellent harbour and strategic location helped turn it into an important centre of commerce and by 1416, Copenhagen had become the royal capital of Denmark.
Many of the city's outstanding buildings date back to the reign of King Christian IV, who was king from 1588 to 1648. Today, Copenhagen is one of the world's premier design capitals, full of sumptuous palaces, copper-roofed town houses and atmospheric cobbled squares. Copenhagen is home to the Little Mermaid statue, the character from Hans Christian's Andersen's celebrated fairy tale. It is now the most popular tourist attraction in Denmark and one of the most photographed statues in the world
