EPT London became a tale of two firsts in Season 5 - PokerStars added £250k to create the first £1 million guaranteed main event top prize - and PokerStars also launched the first ever European Poker Tour high roller tournament, known as the PokerStars.com EPT London £1m Showdown.

The main event attracted a staggering 596-strong field, with 115 of those players having won their seats online with PokerStars. The PokerStars.com EPT London £1m Showdown attracted 86 players, including five qualifiers - no mean feat with an entry fee of ₤20k.

The main event final table proved one of the most exciting spectacles ever witnessed on the EPT with American Michael Martin staging a remarkable comeback to win the event. At one point, he was down to just 95,000 in chips and in the big blind of 80,000. But he tripled, doubled and doubled up again to vault into the lead with just four players remaining - and never relinquished the lead from that point on.

The £1m Showdown provided a star-studded field with Team PokerStars Pros Daniel Negreanu, Barry Greenstein and Alex Kravchenko lining up against heavyweights such as Phil Ivey, Chris “Jesus” Ferguson and Gus Hansen. None of these made it to the final table but with the likes of Team PokerStars Pro Isabelle Mercier, Scotty Nugyen, David Benyamine and John Juanda all in the final, spectators were not left disappointed. WSOP-E winner Juanda made it to heads-up but even he couldn’t stop Jason Mercier. Already a winner at EPT4 San Remo and with a final table appearance at EPT5 Barcelona only a few weeks earlier, Mercier was now able to add the high roller winner’s cheque of ₤516,000 to an incredible year of achievements.
