    WARSAW & POLAND

Warsaw (Warszawa in Polish) is both the capital of Poland and its largest city, with a population of some 1.6 million people.

The first Polish state was born in 966 and the country became a kingdom in 1025. In 1569, it joined the Grand Duchy of Lithuania to form the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth but by 1795 this ceased to exist leaving the Poles without a state for the next 123 years.

Poland regained its independence in 1918 after World War I but lost it again in World War II, emerging several years later as a communist country under control of the former Soviet Union. In 1989 it threw off the communist yoke and today is a liberal democracy and a member of NATO, the EU, United Nations and World Trade Organization.

Warsaw is currently enjoying the biggest economic boom of its history and has a rich cultural heritage, home to more than 30 major theatres, music venues and festivals as well as numerous museums and art galleries. Frederick Chopin was born in the city.

The Old Town quarter, carefully reconstructed after World War II, is one of the city's most prominent tourist attractions and on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. The "Royal Road" is also a popular attraction, with lots of notable classicist palaces including the Presidential Palace and the Warsaw University campus.

    Currency
The currency in Poland is the Polish Zloty (PLN). Approximate exchange rates are as follows:

  • 1 PLN = $0.39; $1 = 2.50 PLN
  • 1 PLN = €0.27; €1 = 3.63 PLN
  • 1 PLN = £0.20; £1 = 4.90 PLN
