- What is Monte Carlo?
Monte Carlo is a district of Monaco, a tiny principality of just 30,000 souls on the French Mediterranean coast. The whole country is only 2 sq. km in size. Culturally, Monaco is part of France and French is the official language. Politically, however, Monaco has been an independent nation since 1419, ruled by the House of Grimaldi. The present head of state is Prince Albert, son of the late Prince Rainier, who was married to the American film star Grace Kelly until her death in a car accident in 1982. Monaco has relaxed policies on taxation and gambling, which is why the principality has been a haven to Europe's wealthy for over a century.
